George French Angas was the eldest son of George Fife Angas, a founder of South Australia. An enthusiastic naturalist and artist, at 20 he reached South Australia, visited New Zealand and Sydney. Returned to England in 1847, later returned to South Australia and finally settled in Sydney in 1853.

The earliest auction listing we have for George Angas is in 1967 and in total 335 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 245 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $418,200 for Eaglehawk Gully, Bendigo sold by Bonhams in November 2020. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by George Angas are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of South Australia and a further six major public national galleries (see list below).
