Born at Hastings, New Zealand in 1908, Rita Angus (Cook) studied at the Canterbury School of Art, Christchurch. She has been hailed, along with Toss Woollaston and Colin McCahon, as helping to establish new traditions in New Zealand painting during the 1930s and 1940s.
