Born in Victoria in 1951, Howard Arkley studied at Prahran CAE and at the Melbourne State College which he completed in 1975, and in the same year held his first solo exhibition. In 1977, through a fellowship and residency, he was able to study and work in Paris and New York. By the late 1980s his work was focussed on what he is best known for: the depiction of ordinary Melbourne suburbia in bright garish colours. In 1991 the Monash University Gallery held a major retropective of his work. He represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1999 with The Home Show, but died of a drug overdose the same year, shortly after returning to Melbourne.
