Julian Rossi Ashton was born in London in 1851, the eldest of the five children of Thomas Briggs Ashton and his wife, a Florentine and daughter of an Italian count. He studied in the West London School of Art, London and Academie Julian in Paris around 1873. In 1878 he moved to Australia as illustrator for the Illustrated Australian News. He became friendly with Louis Buvelot in Melbourne, and with his brother George, covered the demise of the Kelly gang at Glenrowan. After 5 years he moved to a rival paper, the Australasian Sketcher. He was a teacher at the Art Society of N.S.W. School from 1892-96, and he founded the Julian Ashton Art School.

Julian Ashton is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1967 of 546, of which 364 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $147,625 for Circular Quay, Sydney 1888 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in September 2004. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
