Jack Baird was born in Sydney and studied with J.S. Watkins and Julian Ashton and at East Sydney Technical College. A painter and cartoonist, he was a foundation member of the Society of Australian Black and White Artists formed in 1925, and was a contributor to Smith's Weekly in the 1930s. He also worked as a staff artist on the Sydney Evening News, Associated Newspapers, and the Sydney Morning Herald. During World War II he was an accredited war artist for the the Sunday Sun. In the mid 1940s began painting in oils, his subjects being landscapes and figural studies.

The total number of works by John Forsyth Baird offered for sale by auction since 1991 is 20, of which 14 (70%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,500 for Switch sold by Amanda Addams Auctions in April 2008. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2017.
