He emigrated to Victoria in 1851 and there painted views of the Castlemaine district. He then moved to Sydney and worked as an architectural draughtsman for the Post Office. In 1856 he travelled to Wellington, New Zealand, and worked in the Provincial Survey Office, and then travelled between Australia and New Zealand over the next few years, living in Auckland from 1959. He died in Parnell, an Auckland suburb in 1974. His works, executed in oil and watercolour depict landscapes in both Australia and New Zealand.
