A New Zealand neo-expressionist painter born in 1949, in Nelson, Philip Clairmont studied at the Canterbury School of Art. In 1973 he received a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant, and by 1977 had moved to Auckland and was painting full-time. He became known as an expressionist or neo-expressionist creating large paintings on coarse hessian canvas, his subjects often being of a domestic nature, but abstracted into frightening images.
