Born in Victoria in 1885, Cumbrae-Stewart was best known for her pastel studies of nudes. She studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School, 1903-4 and from 1909 to 1919 she exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society. She spent the 1920s and 1930s painting in Britain, France and Italy, returning to Australia in 1939. She was also a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Her work is represented in state galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Janet Cumbrae-Stewart is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 569, of which 393 (69%) were sold.
