Born in England in 1929, Robert Ellis is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London and began exhibiting his work publicly during that time. He served for two years in the RAF during World War II, and after teaching in Somerset, arrived in New Zealand in 1958 to take up a lecturing post with Auckland University School of Fine Arts, where he continued his career, retiring as an Emeritus Professor in 1994. A contemporary artist, he held over 60 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows during thoise years.
