Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1948, Robert McLeod studied at Glasgow School of Art until 1969 prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1972. McLeod painted in an abstract style until the 1990's when his work started to move towards figuration. By 2000, the figuration had completely taken over. He has been teaching art at Wellington High School for more than 30 years while regularly exhibiting his own work throughout New Zealand and in Sydney.
