Born in New South Wales in 1942, Shead studied at North Sydney Technical College. A painter, print and film maker, he was associated with the 'Arty Wild Oat' and 'Ox' magazines. He lived and worked for six months in Paris in 1973, and in the 1980s he spent time in France, Spain, Italy and Holland. During a residency in southern France, he also spent a year in Budapest before returning to Australia. He has exhibited in over than seventy group exhibitions and had over fifty solo exhibitions, as well as illustrating numerous books. He won the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1993 and won the Dobell Prize in 2004.

Garry Shead is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1973 of 1,659, of which 1,058 (64%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $439,200 for The Bearers (Queen of Suburbia) 1997 sold by Sotheby's in November 2018. This year 34 works have been offered for sale.
