Born in Victoria in 1904, Thake studied in Melbourne. One of the earliest Australian painters to work in a surrealist manner, he worked for many years as a commercial illustrator. He first exhibited a selection of paintings and linocuts in 1927. During World War II he was an official war artist with the Royal Australian Air Force. He later worked in the fields of industrial design and illustration and produced a small number of paintings.
