Born in 1927 in Port Augusta, South Australia, Jack Absalom is known as an outback artist. Absalom grew up on the Nullabor Plains and spent years working in the bush in many occupations. He started painting in 1972 when he travelled to the Flinders Ranges with a group of artists. He was a member of the Broken Hill based group of artists, the 'Brushmen of the Bush' which consisted of Absalom, Pro Hart, John Pickup, Hugh Schulz, and Eric Minchin, raised millions of dollars for charity. He was awared the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2006 for service to the visual arts as a painter and to the community through fundraising for a range of charitable organisations.
