Henri Bastin was born in Belgium and arrived in Australia in 1921. Bastin began painting while working on a Queensland sheep-grazing property. His naive paintings in the manner of Rousseau were shown at the Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne, in 1958. These exhibitions established Bastin as a pioneer of naive art in Australia.
