Born in South Australia in 1912, Hele studied in South Australia and Europe. He is best known for his portaits, for which he won several Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prizes. Returning to Australia, he won the South Australian Centenary Competition. He was an official war artist during both World War II and the Korean War. In 1954 he was commissioned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to paint the opening of Federal Parliament and was knighted in 1983.
