Born in Diamond Harbour on the Banks Peninsula , New Zealand in 1865, Margaret Stoddart was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Returning to New Zealand with her family in 1880, she ennrolled at the Canterbury School of Art. Her art career began in th e1880s making her one of the first women to be a professional artist in New Zealand. A watercolourist, best remembered for her studies of flowers and river beds, she exhibited her work in Canberbury from 1883. In the late 1890s she went to England and Europe, where she exhibited at the Royal Academy, Paris Salon and he Newlyn School in Cornwall, before returning to New Zealand about 1906. Stoddart taught at the Canterbury School of Arts, was a council member of the Society of Arts, and was a leading member of the Christchurch art community.
