A New Zealand artist born in 1949, Alvin Pankhurst studied graphic design at Wellington Polytechnic School of design from 1966 to 1969. He first exhibited his surrealist and in 1970 and became known in the 1970s for his realist and surrealistic paintings. He won the Benson & Hedges Art Award in 1974. Since then he has exhibited in New Zealand and internationally including in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London in 2001.
