Born in Townsville, Queensland in 1946, Peter Lawson studied art by correspondence from 1960-62 and worked as a commercial artist from 1962 to 1970, after which he became a full-time artist. He is principally a painter of Australian outback scenes and historical subjects in oil and watercolour. He has exhibited in Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney and his work was included in the Australian Art Expo in the Usa in 1985. He has illustrated several books, including a book of poems by his great uncle, Henry Lawson. He lives and paints on Magnetic Island, off Townsville, Queensland
