Richard Read (Senior) was born in London around 1765 and arrived in Australia in 1813 as a convict. Granted a ticket of leave later in the year, he went on to become a portrait and historical painter in Sydney, painting several portraits of Governor Macquarie and other dignitaries. He was granted a full pardon in 1825 and is believed to have left Australia at this time. His work is represented in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, National Library of Australia and Mitchell Library.
