Agnes Newberry (Peg) Maltby (nee Orchard) was born in England in 1899. She married in 1917, and her husband served World War I in the (British) Royal Field Artillery from 1915 to 1919, after which they migrated to Western Australia in 1924. They later moved to Melbourne, and Peg Maltby became a member of the Victorian Artist's Society, where she exhibited. She became known as an illustrator of children's books, with pixies and fairies and romanticised portraits of aboriginal people. She also wrote and illustrated Peg's Fairy Book, first published in 1944, with new editions until the 1960s. Peg Maltby also painted Australian wildflowers and native birds.
