Born in Liverpool, England, Walter Follen Bishop studied at the Liverpool South District School of Art and in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1882. He travelled widely in Great Britain as well as in Australia, South Africa and the Channel Islands. Married to Florence Fitzgerald, little is known of their Australian travels. However he is believed to have lived in South Australia for several years. A number of Australian paintings by both artists are known to exist.

The earliest auction listing we have for W. Follen Bishop is in 1974 and in total 102 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 69 (68%) were sold.
