Born in Katoomba New South Wales in 1945, Arthur McIntyre studied at the Alexander Mackie's College in Sydney (now the National Art School) and in Paris. Working in collage, drawing and painting, he exhibited widely in Australia and overseas. He was an art critic for "The Australian" from 1977 to 1978, was the Sydney art critic for "The Age" during the 1980s, and was a regular contributor to the journal Art & Australia from 1975 to 1990. McIntyre won several art awards the McIntyre the acquisitive Gold Coast City Art Gallery Prize in 1987.
