Born in Yass, New South Wales in 1929, Tony Crago was educated on his parent's property in the Warrumbungle Ranges near Coonabarabran, at Wolaroi College, Orange and the Scots College, Sydney, after which he studied art at East Sydney Technical College. He held his first exhibition in 1973 and in 1976 won the Toohey's Art Competition. After a painting and working sojourn in Europe he returned to Sydney where for a period he became occupied in the art and design field before turning full time to his first love - painting. His country background and sense of history are reflected in his choice of subject matter. He has held many solo shows since his first in 1973 and in 1976 he won the Toohey's Art Competition.
