Born in Victoria in 1931, Laycock studied at the National Gallery School from 1949 to 1953. A contemporary of Clifton Pugh, John Howley and Lawrence Daws, he first exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society gallery in 1955, then held regular exhibitions from the 1960s onward in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. He won the Travelodge Art Prize in 1970 and the McCaughey Prize in 1972 and now lives and works in Khancoban, NSW.
