Born in Sydney in 1903, Raymond McGrath studied at the Julian Ashton School under Raynor Hoff and in England. He was a painter, writer and printmaker, but was perhaps best known as an architect. He moved to England in the 1920s and worked for several years as a design consultant with the BBC. An official war artist from 1940, he then became the principal architect for the Office of Public Works in Dublin. In 1970 he became Professor of Architecture at the Royal Hiberian Academy, a position he held until his death in 1977.
