Born in Dargaville on the North Island of New Zealand in 1925, Milan Mrkusich is mainly a self-taught artist and is known as a pioneer of abstract painting in New Zealand. He first exhibited at the Auckland School of Architecture in 1949, and has since exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1972 and 1985, and at the Gus Fisher Gallery in 2009. Mrkusich was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997.
