Born in Geelong, Victoria in 1905, Dudley Wood studied at the Swinburne Technical College and the National Gallery School from 1926 to 1927. During World War II he was appointed an official war artist and worked as a camouflage artist with the RAAF in Queensland. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize with two works in 1941 and the Wynne Prize in 1944. A commercial artist and painter mainly of bush landscapes, he became a teacher of watercolour painting at the Swinburne Technical College in 1962 until 1970. He exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society and won several local awards.
