Born in Scotland in 1851, John Scott arrived in New Zealand in 1877 to become Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Otago. A watercolourist, he was a member of the Otago Art Society from 1874, and a leading figure in the Dunedin art world. A painting for which he is well known is a watercolour of the Moeraki boulders.
