Born in England in 1856, John Madden studied art in London and became drawing master at a school before arriving in New Zealand in 1877. He settled in Christchurch and taught drawing at schools. He exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts and in the USA with the St Louis Exposition in 1904. In 1893 he founded the Palette Club, and in 1905 visited Europe.
