Born circa 1829 Margaret Sarah Cleburne was one of the eight daughters of Richard Cleburne, a Tasmanian merchant, and his wife Sarah. She is believed to be a pupil of Thomas Evans Chapman, an artist who arrived in Van Dieman's Land in 1834 and advertised lessons in drawing and painting. Known as a sketcher and watercolourist, many of her works are unsigned, others only initialled and all are undated.
