The son of Frederick McCubbin, Louis McCubbin was born in Melbourne in 1890. As well as painting, he taught at the Sunshine Technical College from 1935 and was president of the Victorian Artists' Society. He served as official war artist in World War I and in 1920 was commissioned to paint a mural of battle scenes for the Australian National War Memorial Museum in Canberra. He also painted a series of pictures of the Great Barrier Reef for the Australian National Travel Association.
