Born in Scotland in 1737, John Hunter made the sea his career, being promoted to captain in 1782. He was second captain of the Sirius in the First Fleet. After a period in Australia he was shipwrecked at Norfolk Island, and while stranded there he carried out a full survey of the island. He returned to England, later being appointed to succeed Philip as Governor of the New South Wales colony. He returned to England again in 1801. Hunter died in London in 1821. A number of his sketches are in the Nan Kivell Collection at the National Library in Canberra.
