An accomplished musician and landscape painter, George Pownall was born in Radcliffe-on-Trent,Nottinghamshire, in 1866 and arrived in Sydney about 1911 then settled in Melbourne. He specialised in small paintings of London and then Melbourne street scenes, also stage painter at old Tivoli and Bijou Theatres. He also worked as a conductor, composer, tenor singer and pianist, painting in his spare time. Pownall died in 1939 most likely in Melbourne.
