Born in Marylebone, England in 1889, Lawlor arrived in Australia in 1910 and was known as a writer, critic and painter. He studied at the National Gallery School in 1929 and 1930. He held his first exhibition in Melbourne in 1930 and extensively thereafter. He was a strident advocate for the cause of modern art and he became president of the Contemporary Society in Melbourne. He died in 1969. A retrospective of his work was held at Heide Park & Art Gallery in 1983.
