Born in New South Wales in 1929, Rose studied at Newcastle Technical College, East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton School in 1948-49. He developed a distinctive style of abstract paintings which is notably economical in form and colour and his work was included in significant exhibitions in Australia and London in the early 1960s. He held over 20 solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and New York from 1957 until his death in 1997.
The total number of works by William Rose offered for sale by auction since 1971 is 187, of which 127 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,200 for Industrial Painting sold by Christies in June 2000. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by William Rose are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
