Born in Bathurst, New South Wales in 1949, Carroll studied at Bathurst Technical College and at the Royal Art Society and became a full-time artist in 1973 and held his first solo exhibition in 1995 in Manly, NSW. Since then he has shown at over 40 exhibitions around the New South Wales Central Coast and in Sydney. He has also exhibited in the Wynne Prize at Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Blake Prize for Religious Art, and won the The ACTA Maritime Award in 1987 and the The Sydney Morning Herald Art Prize in 1990. He died in 2019 as the result of a fire in his studio at The Entrance, NSW.
