Originally a postal worker and farmer, Hempel was born c1887 but turned to painting and studied under Max Meldrum in Melbourne from 1914 to 1922. A landscape and floral artist, he was a member of Australian Art Association, the Victorian Artists society where he exhibited, and the Twenty Melbourne Painters group. He moved to Tasmania in 1922 and then went to live in London the following year, where he exhibited with the Royal Academy. He and his wife and child were killed in an air raid in London in 1942.
