William Crothers Fitler was born in Philadelphia 1857 and studied art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He came to Australia with S.B. Schell and W.T. Smedley to work on the production of the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia from 1884-1888. Little is known of the artist's later period. Fitler is known to have visited and worked in New Zealand with Schell, and has works in public collections in that country. He is believed to have returned to America as a condition of his assignment. Fitler married a divorced American artist Ms.Claude Raquet Hirst at New York in 1901. A black and white artist, as well as colour tonalist landscape painter, Fitler has many colour paintings to his credit in art galleries across America, New Zealand and Australia, the latter including one of The Queensland Club from the Botanic Gardens, and another of Queensland Parliament House.
