Born in Scotland in 1863, Charles Tindall arrived in Australia in 1887. He was best known for watercolour paintings of Sydney Harbour and its shipping and for his landscapes of the Australian countryside. A member of the Royal Art Society and foundation member of Australian Watercolour Institute, he was an early member of D H Souter's Sydney Brush Club (1888), along with other members Percy Spence, George Lambert, Syd Long, J S Watkins and H S Hopwood.
The total number of works by Charles Tindall offered for sale by auction since 1972 is 230, of which 146 (63%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $12,810 for The S.S. Wyreema sold by Mossgreen Auctions in October 2013. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Charles Tindall are held by the Art Gallery of NSW.
