Born in England in 1896, Ernest Salter was awarded a decoration for his service in World War I. In 1922 he arrived in Australia intending to farm, but after a year moved to Melbourne and worked as a shoe designer. He studied art at the National Gallery with Max Meldrum and joined the Victorian Artists' Society. Principally a landscape and seascape painter, he worked mostly with oils, but also with pastels and watercolours. Salter later helped form the Heidelberg District Artists' Society to help young artists.

The earliest auction listing we have for Ernest Salter is in 1992 and in total 10 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 7 (70%) were sold. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 1999.

Ernest Salter is not listed in any of the standard biographical references listed on our references page.
