Born in Dunnolly, Victoria in 1870, Harcourt studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne from 1886 to 1888 and after spending time in the Western Australian goldfields in the 1890s, he went to London and studied at the Westminster Art School in 1901 with further studies in Belgium and Paris. Well known for his paintings, he was also an accomplished musician and instrument maker. He returned to Australia in 1912 living in Melbourne and Sydney, until 1992 when he spent six years in Europe and the UK. On his return in 1928 he lived in Heidelberg Melbourne, and continued exhibiting until 1938.
We have records of art auction sales by Clewin Harcourt from 1971 and in total 161 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 128 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,900 for Tea Party sold by GFL Fine Art in July 1999. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Clewin Harcourt are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
