Born in South Africa in 1906, Palmer also lived in France and England before her arrival in Australia when in her teens in 1921. She studied at East Sydney Technical College from 1924 to 1927. After her graduation she worked for several years as a commercial artist before becoming a full time artist. She became known for her decorative linocuts of birds and animals, for which she won several awards and exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. She also exhibited regularly with the Society of Arts and Crafts up to 1954,.
