About Ben Strange
A painter and draughtsman, Ben Strange was born in Ireland in 1868, arriving in Perth in 1885. He worked on the Coolgardie goldfields where his drawings came to the attention of the newspaper, the 'Goldfields Courier' and he was commissioned to draw a weekly page. He also contributed to the 'Coolgardie Pioneer' until he moved to Perth. He was awarded the Queen Victoria Medal for his service in the Boer War and for 30 years was staff artist for the 'Western Mail'. His drawings of people on the goldfields are of considerable historical value.
