One of Australia's most interesting abstract painters, Tuckson was born in Egypt in 1921. He had studied art in England at the Hornsey School of Art, and later in Sydney after World War II when he migrated to Australia, arriving in 1946. He began exhibiting with the Society of Artists and the Contemporary Art Society of Australia. In 1950, he was appointed assistant director of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales. He helped to shift Australia’s perception of Aboriginal art which had been exhibited in natural history museums from an ethnographic point of view and gave it the status of fine art. He was also responsible for introducing Melanesian art to the gallery’s collection.
