Born in Gore, New Zealand in 1929, Shona McFarlane studied at Dunedin Teachers College and in England at the Hammersmith School of Art in London. She worked as a journalist until the 1970s when she established an art gallery in Dunedin. In 1994, she was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours list. She wrote six books and was vice president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts for many years. She painted for more than 50 years, creating thousands of paintings.
