Born in 1899, Robert Field studied at the Royal College of Art, London from 1919 to 1923. He arrived in New Zealand in 1925. He was a painter, sculptor, writer and teacher of modern art at Dunedin Technical College. Field exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, The Otago Art Society in 1926 and 1927 and The Group, based in Canterbury from 1931.
