Born in Devonshire, England in 1888, John Weeks arrived in New Zealand with his family in 1892. He studied at Auckland's Elam School of Art and later at the East Sydney Technical College. After serving in the First World War he continued his studies at the Canterbury College of Art, and in the UK and Europe. He was an extensive traveller, spending time in England, Australia, Europe and North Africa, studying at the Edinburgh College of Arts and Andre L'Hote's Academy in Paris before returning to teach at Elam in 1929. In 1958 he was awarded the OBE for services to art.
John Weeks is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1988 of 1,399, of which 1,123 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $53,070 for King Country Landscape sold by International Art Centre in February 1995. This year 11 works have been offered for sale.
