Frank Beck was born in Tuena, New South Wales, but lived most of his life in Sydney. He was a self-taught realist painter, and graphic artist. He worked as an illustrator for Associated Newspapers in Sydney, and travelled the world working in London, New York, Paris and Damascus. He was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1965. Frank Beck was also a freelance illustrator of books and taught drawing at Randwick and East Sydney Technical Colleges and the Fine Arts Academy in Damascus. In 1970, his drawings of the Swan Hill Folk Museum in Victoria were presented to Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh and have become part of the Royal Collection.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,105 for Untitled sold by Lawsons in August 2013.
