Florence Williams was born in London in 1833, Although she was untrained , except for a few lessons from J. E. Millais, she began exhibiting at the Royal Academy while still in her teens. She first travelled to Australia with her husband and young family in 1865, returning to England after two years, and then finally settling in Australia in 1873. They initially lived in Tasmania, until her husband was transferred to work in Sydney. She was a regular exhibitor at the NSW Academy of Art annual exhibition where she received certificates of merit for her paintings of flowers and fruit, and in 1874 she won a silver medal for The Dessert. In 1880, she became a founding member of the Art Society and from that time, regularly exhibited with them.
