Born in Tasmania in 1908, Jack Carington Smith studied at the East Sydney Technical College and in Europe. He is known for his portraits, one of which was awarded the 1963 Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize, and his landscapes. As a teacher Jack Carington Smith did much to foster contemporary art in Tasmania.
